Ballast water treatment regulations are now taking effect. Both the IMO Ballast Water Management (BWM) Convention, the BMWS Code, and U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) legislation are in force.Alfa Laval PureBallast 3 is a dependable choice not only in its own right, but also in terms of the global organization behind it.

  • The first chemical-free ballast water treatment solution to gain IMO type approval
  • One of the first non-domestic ballast water treatment solutions approved by the Chinese, Japanese and Korean flag administrations

Type approvals

Alfa Laval PureBallast 3 is type approved by IMO according to the revised G8 guidelines and by the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG).

IMO type approval

PureBallast 3 was specifically developed for the demands of the marine environment, with the needs of marine customers firmly in mind. Our work in ballast water treatment is part of a larger effort. Alfa Laval is committed to meeting legislative demands with workable, sustainable solutions that go unnoticed on board.  Alfa Laval PureBallast 3 is certified for use in all water salinities: fresh, brackish and marine

USCG type approval

The USCG type approval for PureBallast 3, which allows the discharge of ballast in United States waters, was issued in December 2016. Today’s PureBallast 3 is certified for use in all water salinities: fresh, brackish and marine. The type approval testing was performed using the CMFDA/FDA (staining) method and the same hardware, power consumption and flow as the IMO-approved version of the system.

Type approval for early generations

Most systems of the previous generation, PureBallast 2, can also be upgraded for USCG type approval. In April 2020, USCG tests were completed using a PureBallast 2 system with a Boll & Kirsch filter and minor modifications. The solution was type approved in November 2020 and can operate in both seawater and brackish water.
