The world is turning to renewables and Canada should too with its clean electricity regulations

Canada has a solid foundation to lead the clean energy movement, with over 80% of its electricity coming from non-emitting sources.

However, if we want to achieve a net-zero grid by 2035, we need to ramp up efforts to stay competitive.

Robust clean energy regulations will be needed if Canada wants to accelerate its transition to clean energy. For provinces such as Ontario, Saskatchewan and Alberta, this transition may be more challenging than for other provinces. However, by looking to other countries, such as Germany, they can leverage similar strategies to overcome these challenges.

“Germany was in a situation similar to where Ontario and the prairie provinces are today. Now, Germany is on a pathway for 80 per cent clean electricity by 2030 and 100 per cent by 2035. In 2023 alone, Germany installed 17 GW of renewables — more than Alberta’s entire electricity capacity today.”
